LANGUOROUS LANGKAWI. A lovely book. The writer Jérôme Bouchaud, who’s been based in Langkawi for several years, and Penang’s own Howard Tan, photographer extraordinaire and the man behind StudioHoward, have created Langkawi Style, a tribute to those historic islands to the north of us and an invitation to look again at a place that we take for granted.
Langkawi is steeped in a history of fable. The Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa — drawing on the Ramayana — speaks of the period after the war between Sri Rama and Raja Handuman, “the Island of Langka was deserted except by the bird Geruda”. And then there is the story of the monstrous snake of Langkawi. Though Langkawi Style is not about history or culture, it does invite, through its sensitive text and wonderful images, a moment to pause and to think about the people and places, the artists and architecture of a wonderful place. It’s a fine companion to Lemongrass’s earlier volume, Malacca Style.
